The modern bra, as we know it today, was invented by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob, also known as Caresse Crosby. In 1913, she created a prototype for a backless brassiere that lifted and separated the breasts, which was a departure from the constricting corsets that were commonly worn by women at the time. She received a patent for her invention in 1914 and went on to start a successful lingerie business. While there were earlier versions of bras, Mary Phelps Jacob’s design is widely regarded as the precursor to the modern bra.
